Garage Door Panel Replacement
Years of slap shots have peppered the lower two sections with dents.
In plain words
Expect two visits. On the first, the technician makes the door safe to use or safe to leave closed, identifies the manufacturer and model, measures the section, photographs the damage and its neighbours, and checks the hinges, rollers, tracks, cables and springs for anything the impact disturbed. The replacement section is then ordered to that specification, since sections are made to order for each model rather than kept on a shelf. On the second visit the section is installed, the hardware is refitted, the springs are re-tensioned if needed, and the door and opener are tested through full cycles before the technician leaves.
How the visit goesFrom outside, the horizontal groove between two sections now steps sideways by a centimetre. One section has shifted on its hinges after a roller jumped the track, and on the way down the door catches at exactly that point.

How the visit goes

Is a matching section still made?
Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.
Re-tensioning and balancing the door
A replaced section can weigh a little more or less than the one that came out, especially when insulation or glazing differs, and the springs are set to the door as it now is. With the opener still disconnected, the technician winds the torsion spring to specification or rehangs the extension springs, then lifts the door by hand. A balanced door stays put around waist height, drifts neither up nor down, and moves through its travel with steady, even effort. Adjustments are made a quarter turn at a time until that is true, and the cables are checked for equal tension on both drums.
Holding off rust on the lower edge
Salt and slush are what turn a healthy bottom section into a flaking one, so give the lower sections a rinse when the salt season ends and again after any heavy slush. Look along the bottom edge and around the seal retainer for chipped paint and touch it up with the colour from your record before bare steel has a chance to bloom. Keep the bottom seal in good condition so water sheds off the face rather than sitting on the lip. Inside, a glance at the back of the section during the monthly check catches moisture marks early.

What affects the quote
Opener adjustments afterwards
Resetting the opener's limits and force and testing the safety reversal is part of finishing the job. Where the opener arm bracket or a worn trolley needs replacing as well, that hardware is listed.
Door width and section size
A section for a double door is nearly twice the length of one for a single door, with more steel, more hinges and a heavier lift. Section height and thickness feed into the same line.
Whether the exact section is still made
A current model is a straightforward order. A discontinued design may mean a section from a related series, a custom-made section, or a discussion about the whole door, each of which lands differently on the quote.
What to have ready
- What caused the damage, and when did it happen?
- Are any hinges, rollers or cables visibly bent, loose or hanging?
- Is the door insulated, and how thick are the sections?
Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions
QuestionsThe car has just hit the door. What should I do before you arrive?
Stop using the door and leave it where it is, whether open or closed, unless leaving it open is unsafe. Pull the opener's plug so nobody presses a remote out of habit. Keep people and pets clear, especially if the door hangs unevenly or a cable looks loose, since the springs are still under tension. Take a few photographs, find the manufacturer's label if you can, and tell the technician exactly what happened and how hard the contact was.
How much room do you need in the garage on the day?
Enough to bring the new section in, lay it flat, and work at both tracks and the spring shaft. Moving vehicles out of the garage and clearing a metre or two along the walls where the tracks run makes the job smoother, as does clear access to the opener and the ceiling around the spring. Sections are handled by two people and are wider than the door opening, so a clear path from the driveway helps.
Why do bottom sections get damaged so often in winter?
Meltwater runs under the bottom seal during a thaw and freezes the door to the slab overnight. When the opener starts in the morning, it pulls on a door that is anchored at the bottom, and something yields: the section bows, a hinge tears from its stile or a cable jumps. Salt and slush thrown off the car then corrode the lower edge. Keeping the seal free of ice and rinsing salt away protects the new section.
